Friday Faves

31 Dec

This week’s Friday Faves are less about favorite things and more about things to change.  Yes, my friends it time for the dreaded New Year’s Resolutions List.  I’m not very good at following through on long-term goals which range anywhere from not buying anymore underpants (I was slightly addicted from 2003-2007) to paying off my credit cards.  I pretty much suck at it.

This year WILL be different.  Why do you ask?  Well, this is the first year that I’m sharing my resolutions with the blog world.  This means that somewhere out there are readers (hello?  are you there?) who can hold me accountable when I fall off the wagon.  Hopefully, this same time next year I’ll be able to look back on this list and be proud of accomplishing at least 1 item.

With that being said, here are my 2011 New Year’s Resolutions:

1) Get back into the jeans that fit me at the beginning of 2010. I think this is more reasonable than proclaiming “I’m going to lose 50 lbs. this year!”  I’m assuming, of course, that I haven’t gained 50 lbs. since those jeans fit me.  EEK!

2) Have $500 in savings. This may sound like a ridiculously easy task to most people, but for someone who has a severe shopping addiction like me $500 might as well be $500,000.

3) Pay off 1 credit card. This may prove to be the straw that breaks the camels back.  I have a monthly budget that I try to follow, but I just can’t resist cashmere!

Here goes nothing!

The Little Gucci Dress

29 Dec

If you ask anyone who knows me who my girl crush is they will immediately tell you Victoria Beckham.  I think my love for all things Posh really started after seeing the movie Spice World when VB had to decide between “…the little Gucci dress, the little Gucci dress, OR the little Gucci dress.”  This single line pretty much summed up my ideal life.

This woman has it all- great style, fabulous sense of humor, adorable kiddies, and of course the hottie hubby!

I was completely devastated when I had to return my DVR box to Comcast in order to install Fios because it contained the single most entertaining documentary of all time “Victoria Beckham: Coming to America.”

VB has often been criticized for her ridiculous airport attire, but I think she always looks fabulous.  And VB has openly admitted to changing into pajamas on the plane to be comfortable.  The woman is a genious…hot to trot for the papparazzi and super comfs for the transcontinental flight.  Here’s VB’s latest airport shot.  I think she looks super chic, and I’m totally digging the extra-long scarf.

She’s also carrying a bag from her new purse line.  As soon as the range is available in the US I’m going to be scooping up one of the “Victoria” bags.  It’ll cost a pretty penny, but it’s gonna be sooooo worth it!  Here’s VB carrying the black version.

Hi Ho, Hi Ho…

28 Dec

It’s back to work I go.  After a nice little snow day yesterday I’m back in the office 😦  It took me forever to get here this morning because sanitation crews are still clearing snow of some of the highways and most of the local streets.  Yet another shining example of tax dollars wasted.  On the bright side I’m only here for 2 days and then it’s vacation time AGAIN!

New Years Eve is my least favorite holiday of the year.  I think it’s overhyped and always a hassle.  Since turning 21 I can recall a total of 1 enjoyable NYE…yes, a boy was involved 🙂  This year I’m staying in with some girlfriends- all of whom have police officer boyfriends who are working that night.  We’ll be cooking and drinking champagne all night, and also having a mini-movie marathon.  On the list are:

1) Love Actually– My favorite holiday romantic comedy.  I laughed, I cried, it was better than Cats!  And that little girl who sings “All I want for Christmas is you” at the end of th movie gives me the chills she’s so good.

2) Despicable Me– I haven’t seen this one yet, but based on the trailer I know I’m going to love it.  Some of the memorable lines I’m looking forward to are “Curse you tiny toilet!” and of course the beloved “IT’S SO FLUFFY!!!”

I’ll be bringing my entire movie collection, which I have stored in one of those CD binders to save space, with me so if there’s time we’ll have plenty to choose from.  Maybe a little Teen Witch action is in order.  TOP THAT!

Digging It

27 Dec

Happy belated MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone.  I was on vacation all last week and took full advantage of being disconnected from the world.  I left all my shopping to the last minute so I was busy fighting the crowds and wrapping my gifts.  I think they came out super cute.  I LOVE the black/white/red plaid paper.

What did everybody get for Christmas?  I got lots of scarves, a pair of Christmas pjs, a super cute necklace from J. Crew, and $$$.  Oh, I almost forgot…my aunt is taking me to the Philippines as my gift!  I leave at the end of January for 2 weeks in the motherland…or at least, my mother’s land.  I can’t wait to go, but I’m a little afraid since it’s technically a third world country.  And it’s going to be 100 degrees with 100% humidity which will present a packing challenge…I’ll be tackling that one after the new year.

NJ had a massive blizzard yesterday, and I’ve been snowed in since.  I just ventured out to clean off my car and almost cried when I saw the 2 feet of snow on top of it.  Not to mention the 5 feet of snow that got plowed up behind it.  Are we having fun yet???

Party Hardy Dude Persons!

16 Dec

Thank you Long Duck Dong for stating, so eloquently in “Sixteen Candles”, that it’s party time! This week I have 3 holiday parties- 2 work, 1 friend. All 3 require very different looks.

The first party is tonight, and is being hosted by a bank on Wall St. This means lots of walking on treacherous cobblestone in freezing temperatures. The answer…WEDGES!

Friday is the office holiday party. Before the recession Corporate Giant would have our holiday parties at museums (i.e. The Metropolitan Museum of Art). This year it’s in the cafeteria…woo freaking hoo. After the official event is the unofficial party in Hoboken with the work friends.

And finally on Saturday, I will be heading over to my friend Kitty’s house for a party with my high school crew.  This will be our first Christmas where someone has a baby so it could get a little scary.  I’m looking forward to pigs in a blanket, pepperoni bread, and Feurzangenbowle which is a German spiced wine that uses a giant sugar cone soaked in 151 proof rum and set afire in the preperation.  I always love a cocktail that incorporates pyrotechnics.

Weekend Roundup

13 Dec

Let’s just say that Saturday night was so epic that I can’t even remember what I did on Friday!  So let’s jump right into it…

For My Midget’s birthday we packed up the car with oodles of shoes and champs for a drive down the Garden State Parkway to Atlantic City.  We stayed at Harrah’s in the Marina section.  After the champagne toast we all headed down to The Pool for cocktails and lots of dancing!  Apparently I was so dead asleep when I got back to the room that I didn’t hear the rest of the party banging on the door or calling the room trying to get back in.  Sorry guys!  Long story short, I’m still exhausted and my feet are destroyed but I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.

Here’s what I wore featuring my newest baby the Chanel quilted clutch.  LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this bag!!!

Something I learned on this trip- apparently the latest pick-up line for guys is to just grunt in your general direction as you walk by.  This happened when we stopped at the rest stop and almost every 5 seconds in the club.  Honestly???  USE YOUR WORDS!!!

Shoes! Shoes! Shoes!

11 Dec

I know I already told you all my wish list for this year, but I think this one last item is worthy of an exception!  It’s the Net-a-Porter Ultimate Shoe Subscription.

One pair of shoes a month, with a total value of $10,000!!!!  UNREAL!

Now, who can I finagle into gifting this to me come Christmas time???

Friday Faves

10 Dec

Winter has snuck up on the tri-state area like a stalker, waiting patiently for just the right moment to pounce.  When I got in my car this morning the thermometer read 18 degrees!  It’s hard to believe that just over a week ago we were all schvitzing (that Yiddish for sweating for all my non-Yiddish speaking friends 🙂 ) our ta-tas off.  It’s officially winter and I’m dreaming of warm sand beaches and umbrella drinks.  Which leads me to the introduction of the newest feature here on Darth Vestis- FRIDAY FAVES.

This week’s Friday Faves- my favorite warm weather vacations:

1. Hawaii– I started going to Hawaii when I was only a year old.  It was an annual vacation for my family until I was about 10, and then we went back when I was 15.  I haven’t been back since, but I dream of making a triumphant return every day.  We always stayed in Oahu at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Honolulu.  Most people prefer the other islands for their seclusion, but I think Honolulu offers the best of Hawaii- beautiful beaches like Hanauma Bay, great shopping at Ala Moana Mall, and great food.

2. St. Martin– And I’m talking about the French side.  The Dutch side is super touristy since this is where the cruise ships come in to port and all of middle-america takes over the duty-free shopping district.  No thank you!  The hotel we stayed at is called La Sammana.  It’s secluded location along the Caribbean Sea makes it an ideal beach vacation.  The pool and beach attendants frequently came around to offer cold fruit kebabs and Evian mist to keep you cool.  Who doesn’t love that!?!  This is also the place that introduced me to Molton Brown products, which I’m so very thankful for.  And the food at every restaurant was to die for.  My not-to-be-missed suggestions: Mario’s Bistro and Toucan Café.

3. Puerto Rico– This is another island my family and I frequented for many years.  Growing up, we stayed out in Dorado (30 min. from San Juan) at the Cerromar Beach Hotel which is now defunct.  Best river pool EVER!  Then we started going to The El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo on the east side of the island (1 hr. from San Juan).  This resort is gorgeous with a beautiful pool area and a private island, but a bit removed from everything else.  It’s now owned by the Waldorf Astoria group so I can’t image the standards have gone down one bit.  2 years ago Miss Liss and I stayed at the El San Juan for a long weekend, and last year I stayed next door at the Ritz Carlton.  Both hotels are located 10 minutes from the airport so they are ideal destinations for a quick trip to reboot the batteries.

4. Aruba– Aruba is quite a bit further south from the other Caribbean islands, but it’s well worth the trip.  The Lewis Black commercials don’t lie, the weather really is perfect every day and the people are even more beautiful.  Our flight down was on the now defunct Air Aruba.  To give you an idea of how great this trip was, it started with our pilot introducing himself…TOM CRUISE!  This was not a joke, and his name was even spelled the same way.  It’s an almost 6 hour flight to the island, but the in-flight crew made it fly by.  The head flight attendant apparently was the winner of some beauty pageant at the recent flight attendants convention, and since it was her last day the rest of the flight crew decided to throw a party for her.  I’m talking confetti, champs, and dancing in the aisles.  AMAZEBALLS!  We stayed at the Hyatt right on the beach.  Again, high marks all around.

5. Turks & Caicos– Please note that I have never been to T&C, however this is next on my list of island vacations.  I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about the island, and it’s usually a hot spot for celebrity sightings.  My roommate’s coworker stayed at Parrot Cay, and she came back with stories about body surfing with Michael J. Fox’s family and lunching with Mick Jagger.  HELLO!  Has anyone every been?  I’d love to hear your reviews.

Weekend Roundup

9 Dec

The last few weekends have been a bit of a snooze fest, so I was really excited to have a packed schedule of activities over the weekend.

FRIDAY– After a long week of work it’s tough to get all dolled up for a night out on the tiles. That’s why I was grateful my friends decided for a low key girls night. We went to dinner at Star Tavern, the BEST pizza in NJ. This was definitely a stretchy pants kind of night.  And then watched the endless number of Real Housewives episodes that I DVRed…I love that DVR has become a verb.

Saturday night Lindz, her beau JB, and I went to the Brooklyn Academy of Music (aka BAM) to see a performance of Trombone Shorty. I was a little skeptical since I’m not a huge jazz fan, but this guy…I was left speechless! He did a 5 minute solo, literally non-stop. Not sure how he did it, but somehow he simultaneously inhaled while continuing to blow his horn. AMAZEBALLS!!!

After the show we went to Junior’s for the most delicious cheesecake in the world. Since I’ve been 10 years old I wanted my wedding cake to be Junior’s cheesecake. This was Lindz’s first time there, which I couldn’t believe, and she got the full experience. The crazy was all out that night and it was SPECTACULAR!

BAM by lizbit77 featuring a scoop neck tank

Sunday I went to my dad’s place for Hannukah brunch.  I got these amazing gloves that can be used with my iPhone.  Now I won’t have to freeze my fingers off to text.

After brunch…and much needed nap time…I went with My Midget to see “Burlesque”.  I went in with very low expectations so as to not be disappointed.  Needless to say I was completely BLOWN AWAY with amazingness.  I mean it had Cher, Stanley Tucci, a ridiculous story line, and the worst acting performance since Mariah Carey in “Glitter”.  In fact, if “Glitter” and “Chicago” had a love child it would most definitely be “Burlesque”.  If you haven’t seen it, you MUST!  Don’t expect Oscar worthy performances, but Cher is still fab-u-lous, and a Stanley Tucci stole the show.

I also submitted my entries for the Michael Kors contest on Polyvore.  What do you think?

Rabbit, Rabbit!

1 Dec

Happy December 1st!  If you can believe it, it’s a balmy 60 degrees here in NJ.  If only it was sunny, rather than rainy and gross.

Also HAPPY HANNUKAH!!!  Tonight marks the first night of the 8 day festival of lights.  I’ll be celebrating with my family over the weekend.  Hopefully they’ve been paying attention and got me a thing or two off my wish list.

1) 2011 Infiniti G37X sedan in Black Obsidian
2) Chanel Classic Caviar medium flap bag
3) a leopard print tote bag
4) David Yurman woven cable ring
5) Burberry Mega Check wrap in Charcoal Check
6) Ugg Bailey Button boots in black
OK, the car and the Chanel are a bit of a stretch but you never know!
On a side note, I came across the most amazing picture of 2 of my most favorite people in the world!

It’s creepy that Barry Manilow is wearing more make-up than VB…but I love him anyway 🙂
